Cornbread is one of those dishes that completes a good southern meal. The best cornbread is homemade cornbread that combines both yellow cornmeal and flour. I’ve learned that an important ingredient to good cornbread is buttermilk. I’ve learned that the secret ingredient is mayo or sour cream. Below is one of my favorite recipes that I’ve ever created. This recipe is for a big 12 inch cast iron skillet. It can be split in half for an 8×8 pan.


2 cups yellow cornmeal

2 cups self-rising flour

2 cups buttermilk

2 sticks melted butter

1 cup sour cream

1 cup sugar

4 large eggs


1. Preheat oven to 350.

2. In a large bowl, mix yellow cornmeal, self-rising flour, buttermilk, and sticks of melted butter.

3. Mix everything together.

4. Add in sour cream, sugar, and eggs.

5. Mix everything together.

6. Pour cornbread mixture into large cast iron skillet.

7. Let cook for 1 hour.
