a 6-Song Melody on NPR’s Tiny Desk

It’s hard to believe that just a couple of years ago, we almost lost one of hip-hop’s legends due to covid. After a great recovery, Rap-A-Lot Records veteran, Scarface is back performing and performing passionately. I
n a 6-song melody for NPR’s Tiny, Scarface opened up with his 2002 hit, “My Block.” Assisting the Houston rapper were the Backyard Band and long time friend and producer, Mike Dean. Scarface introduced himself and wasn’t sure if he should be titled the curator, DJ, or railroad conductor for the show.
After the the performance of “My Block”, Scarface grabbed the guitar and started to assist the band and they got into “Mary Jane” from Scarface 1997 album, The Untouchable. Next was “Smile” that featured Tupac. Before going into “I Seen a Man Die”, Scarface reflected on his cousin Jamal who recently passed away and was in the studio with him when he recorded the song. After this, there was a smooth transition into “F*ck Faces.” Right after, Scarface allowed his son Bryce to come up and introduced him as an exceptional musician that’s 4X better than him. Lastly Scarface performed the Geto Boys’ classic “Mind Playing Tricks on Me.”
Watching the segment of Tiny Desk made me feel as if I was in a cafe listening to the best poetry and vocals I’ve ever heard. This was the most intimate and passionate performance I’ve watched from Tiny Desk.
