Fayetteville, North Carolina veteran, Adam McDowell realized he wanted to become a DJ in college when he started curating playlists and throwing events for friends.
Residing in Columbia, South Carolina since 1998, McDowell, better know as DJ iAM, realized that what began as a hobby quickly turned into a calling.
What’s the best part about being a DJ?
The best part about being a DJ is having the power to shape energy in a room—watching people escape, celebrate, and connect through music I play is a feeling I never get tired of.
How did you end up being the official DJ for South Carolina Gamecocks?
I built a reputation locally for delivering high-energy, crowd-focused sets that mix current hits with classic throwbacks. I DJ’d a lot of events on USC’s campus. That eventually caught the attention of the athletics department at the University of South Carolina. I was invited to DJ a few basketball events, and the chemistry was undeniable. Since then, I’ve been honored to be their go-to DJ for men’s basketball games and a backup for football and womens basketball games.
What is something you’d like all of your future clients to know?
I treat every event like it’s the most important one on my calendar—because for my clients, it is. Whether it’s a corporate function, a wedding, or a packed arena, I bring a tailored experience that’s professional, versatile, and unforgettable.
I’m sure that many DJs or aspiring DJs are influenced by you. What advice would you give a DJ that’s just starting?
Stay consistent, stay humble, and never stop studying the craft. Learn how to read a crowd, mix with intention, and take every gig seriously—big or small. Build your brand like a business and keep your ears open to feedback and inspiration. The hustle never stops, but the rewards are worth it.
