Hip-hop music and soul music go together like bread goes with butter. The legendary soul music from Roberta Flack has had a legendary influence in hip-hop culture.

The Fugees – “Killing Me Softly” (1996)

One of the Fugees’ biggest hits the cover for “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” The song was actually a cover of a cover. The original “Killing Me Softly With His Song” was released in 1972 by Lori Lieberman. Roberta Flack’s version blew up and became popular the following year. The production kept the core melody of the song and added a drum loop for a boom-bap beat.

T.I. – “What You Know” (2006)

T.I.’s 2006 single, “What You Know” sampled “Gone Away” from Roberta Flack’s album, Chapter Two. Her version was a cover from a group called “The Impressions.”

Lil Kim – “Queen B*tch” (1996)

Roberta Flack covered Leonard Cohen’s “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye” in 1969, which was then sampled for Lil’ Kim’s “Queen B**ch” on Hard Core in 1996.

JAY-Z – “No Hook” (2007)

JAY-Z’s “No Hook” from his American Gangster album sampled Roberta Flack’s “Trade Winds.”

Scarface – “On My Block” (2002)

Scarface’s smash 2002 summer banger “On My Block” from his album, The Fix samples the piano intro from the 1971 Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway song “Be Real Black For Me”.
