Detroit native and Houston resident, Devin Johnson gained interested in whipping up the pots while attending college. It wasn’t until the pandemic that Johnson started to pursue the culinary industry seriously.
The year 30 old is of the most creative content creators online. Bringing his own style and incorporating different selections from his vinyl record collection in his cooking videos. Bridging the gap between food and music.
Did you have any training for cooking? School, family members, mentor, etc? How did you learn to cook?
I learned through a lot of trial and error. I’d read recipes, I’d Google videos to try to pick up techniques, I’d just try things out in the kitchen and learn from my mistakes. I haven’t had any formal training at all. Just a lot of winging it!
Tell me what made you tie in food and music with your content?
When I cook, I like to make it a whole experience. From the music you hear, to the aromas you smell, to the food you eat, to the wine or cocktail you drink. I want all of it to be a moment. So when I first started doing content, that’s what made me throw music in.
What’s your favorite kind of music?
I love some R&B. Especially some really good instrumentals. It makes it feel like you’re in a movie and it’s the soundtrack to you and your day.
What has been the greatest reward on your culinary journey?
My greatest reward is always the moment when the room is quiet and all you hear is the sound of spoons and forks scraping the plate. That always makes me happy.
What do you like the most about sharing content on social media?
I love when people notice the process of me cooking. I love when people ask me how/where I got the vinyls I have. It’s always seeing people notice the little things.
What’s something you’d like all of your supporters to know?
First and foremost, thank all of you for supporting me. Y’all are the reason I get up and try to make things. I can’t say enough how blessed I am to have y’all. Secondly, I make food from the heart, with the goal of an experience. I hope y’all get a chance to taste it and let me know what you think. I’ll be doing private dinners and small events soon to start out.
